Description
On the street outside my studio in San Francisco there was a tree which was continually being run over by cabs and buses driving over the curb. After being replaced many times a friend of mine, seeing that the latest replacement was dead, pulled it out of the ground and stuck it back in upside down, seemingly in protest of bad driving.
As I walked out to the street one day and saw it I had to photograph it. The cracks in the sidewalk reminded me of longitude and latitude lines and the tree represented the natural world which was being turned upside down by the activities of the human world.
